This route is
meant for people in good physical condition. We depart in the direction
of the town of Urubamba on a single track, which later becomes a
country road. We turn onto a paved road to start climbing the Chicón
mountain. Once on the dirt road we pass through the small rural
community of Chicón. As we climb on we have some wonderful views
of the glacier and also see the vegetation slowly changing. The
Polylepis Incana spp. or Queuña tree, a typical Andean high
altitude tree, can be seen here, as well as potatoes and wheat.
This part of the journey is all uphill. When we reach the highest
point (3100 meters) there will be time to rest and enjoy a snack
before starting our descent.
We have two
options for the way down: part dirt road and single track or dirt
road only. The return journey takes us down the mountain and through
the town of Urubamba after which we take a dirt trail back to the
starting point.
