This hike starts
near Chinchero which we reach by car. We start walking in Alpachaca
along the shore of lake Piuray towards the village of Tauca. Before
reaching Tauca we take a narrow path ascending a small valley which
lead to the first pass we have to cross. On clear days the view
from this pass is magnificent and we can see the Vilcanota ranges
and the sacred mountain of Ausangate.
Walking on over
the mountain range we spot a small lake to our right and below,
where we can have lunch while watching the Llamas. We continue on
over another pass which again provides some superb views.
We start our
descent into the Sacred Valley. A bit further down, the trail becomes
quite narrow and overgrown. Once we reach a small stream, we follow
it down to several Inca teracces. Lower down we come to a ruin,
the gateway to Huchuy Qosqo.
It takes about
45 more minutes to reach Huchuy Qosqo from this point. Following
the trail we arrive at a small overgrown plateau and, looking over
the edge, are rewarded with our first view of the ruins of Huchuy
Qosqo. We zig zag down the gorge and cross the stream again before
reaching the ruins. Our camp is set up near this site of cultural
heritage. Dinner is prepared and our sleeping bag awaits us.
DAY 2
We spend some
time looking around and listening to our guide exlain the history
of these ruins. After our visit we head towards the small town of
Lamay. Here our driver will pick us up and take us back to the hotel.
